Congratulations to LeQuez Gordon! LeQuez is the St. Petersburg 2012 recipient of the Anne Frank Humanitarian Award. Lequez was chosen from students attending schools in the five county areas that participated in the program.
Anne Frank once said, “It’s a wonder I haven’t abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.” In following the words of this amazing young woman, the Anne Frank Humanitarian Award (AFHA) was established in 2001 with the hope of finding high school students that truly embody that which Ms. Frank spoke of “people (that are) truly good at heart.” Each year the AFHA seeks to recognize the goodness of today’s youth by honoring those that have exhibited outstanding humanitarian efforts. These high school junior students are chosen from both public and private high schools in the Pinellas, Pasco, Hillsborough, Sarasota, and Manatee counties. Moreover, they are recommended by both their principals and guidance counselors based upon their efforts to combat indifference in their communities. This award, furthermore, honors those students whom have made a conscious decision to not only better the lives of individuals or groups inside of their school, but also those outside of it as well.
Lequez will be recognized at the museum on May 30th where family, friends, educators, and legislators have been invited to attend. The Museum feels that “he is a wonderful example and will serve as a role model and inspiration to other students.” We here at the Mavericks High family echo these same sentiments and are ever so proud of Lequez for this amazing accomplishment.
