This past month we watched so many of our students graduate; many of them reaching this great height of achievement despite their obstacles. In the flurry of graduation, it can be challenging to tell each and every one of their stories. Knowing the importance of these tales of triumph being told however, it would only be appropriate to spotlight a few of our shining stars.

Issac Bullard has certainly been on a winning streak. To begin, Issac is our most recent winner of the “Be-In-It-to-Win-It” $100 gift card. Furthermore, he continued by taking the ACT and scored a 21 in the reading section after taking it for the first time! Way to go! Now that he is officially a proud high school graduate, he hopes to continue his studies at Florida A&M University where he would like to study business. We wish him all the best!

Jacoby Gowie proves that with a lot of hard work, you can turn around any situation. When Jacoby first began at Mavericks High he had a 0.6 G.P.A. and 14 credits. For most students, this would have been a deterring factor from continuing in the pursuit of a high school diploma. In fact, Jacoby stated that he was “frustrated and didn’t see a road to graduation.” However, he pressed on, getting placed on a graduation- education plan on February 3rd of this year. From that point forward it was full speed ahead for him. He went on to earn 10 additional credits and to raise his GPA in that short amount of time to a whopping 2.1 G.P.A.! The icing on the cake came on June 13th when Jacoby not only stood before his classmates, as one of the highlighted student speakers, but also walked across the stage to shake his principal’s hand, as she handed him his high school diploma. Jacobie is a shining example of how someone, with the right amount of determination, can knock down the odds that may be stacked against them.

When Jessica Balan started at Mavericks High, she had challenges that would prove tough for any individual. She was a single mother, had just lost her own mother in November 2011, and began with only seven credits in January towards earning her high school diploma. Now, nearly six months later, things have changed dramatically for the 19-year old. She is now an official graduate; having leaped from 7 credits in January to 25! She has learned to balance school, work, and motherhood while all the while maintaining a positive and uplifting attitude for her and others. This was seen moreover, in her capacity as a student ambassador; an esteemed honor given only to students considered to be the best and brightest amongst representatives for their campus. Additionally, Jessica managed to make a great impression on the board for the Community Centers of South Florida Scholarship Foundation. By the time that Jessica had found out about the organization’s scholarship, it was already too late and the deadline had passed. However, with great tenacity and perseverance, she convinced the Foundation that with her triumphs and the tireless efforts she had given during numerous blood drives on campus, that she was a worthy candidate. They agreed. After the deadline and banquet had passed, the committee reconvened and decided to award Jessica a scholarship for $3200. This will definitely come in handy as she continues her studies at Miami-Dade College. Way to go Jessica! You’ve made us so proud! We are sure this isn’t the last we’ll hear of your great accomplishments!

Why let spring have all of the fun showing off all of its blooms? Or only let the summer get things heated up?! Mavericks High of North Miami (MHNM) surely hasn’t; as they rounded out the end of the spring blooming with success and kicking off the summer with quite the sizzle! In a very short span, MHNM has had numerous achievements to celebrate.

For starters, they hosted an amazing career fair that boasted nearly 30 organizations. It was during this great event that MHNM’s very own Mr. Garshly Baptiste, a student ambassador, impressed one of the organizations so much that he actually was offered a scholarship on the spot from Florida Memorial University. Way to go Garshly! Next, Ms. Heather Thompson was recognized as our nominee for Devry University’s Educator of the Year. This included being invited to take part in a beautiful reception amongst other nominees, which was held inside of the newly renovated Student Lounge at their Miramar Campus. What an honor and esteemed group to be called member to! Lastly, and rounding out the end of the spring was Ms. Jessica Balan. This year marked the 31st Annual High School Luncheon held by the Community Blood Centers of South Florida. During the event, which was held at the Signature Grand in Davie, several scholarships were awarded to educators, students, and schools—including our very own Jessica Balan. She had missed the original deadline but after being so impressed by her, the area collection director called and offered her a scholarship. Way to go to MHNM!!! Keep up the great work!

Mavericks High is an Accredited High School that issues diploma’s recognized by the State of Florida.

Mavericks goes through an in depth analysis by each school district prior to being awarded a charter. Each district reviews Mavericks High to ensure that certain standards are met. Only if the standards are met does the district allow the school to open. Once the school is open, students are enrolled, and the district provides funding to the school. The diploma’s offered are the same as those issued by the district.

As an example, please examine this letter from the Superintendent of Pinellas County.

Second Mavericks High Student to be awarded Humanitarian Award!

Congratulations to Ryan Phillips! Ryan is the 2012 Tampa Bay area recipient of the Anne Frank Humanitarian Award. Ryan was chosen from amongst students attending all of the public schools in the Tampa Bay area. Anne Frank once said, “It’s a wonder I haven’t abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.” In following the words of this amazing young woman, the Anne Frank Humanitarian Award (AFHA) was established in 2001 with the hope of finding high school students that truly embody that which Ms. Frank spoke of “people (that are) truly good at heart.” Each year the AFHA seeks to recognize the goodness of today’s youth by honoring those that have exhibited outstanding humanitarian efforts. These high school junior students are chosen from both public and private high schools in the Pinellas, Pasco, Hillsborough, Sarasota, and Manatee counties. Moreover, they are recommended by both their principals and guidance counselors based upon their efforts to combat indifference in their communities. This award, furthermore, honors those students whom have made a conscious decision to not only better the lives of individuals or groups inside of their school, but also those outside of it as well.

Ryan will be recognized at the museum on May 7th at 1:00pm where family, friends, educators, and legislators have been invited to attend. Following the awards, Lisl Schick, a Holocaust survivor, will give a speech to the students. We, the Mavericks High family, with the sincerest of sentiments are ever so proud of Ralph and congratulate him on this amazing accomplishment. Mavericks and Nike Unite

We are pleased to announce a new partnership between Mavericks High of Osceola and Nike, Inc.! Nike, Inc. who has the motto, “A Shoe. A Company. A Journey,” has chosen to take us along for the ride on this journey to success with them. The Nike-Mavericks Project, established in November 2011, was formed to help provide employment opportunities for our students.

In its pilot form, this project was initiated when Nike came to the campus and interviewed thirty students of which they selected six. Those six then continued on in an 8-week pilot program. During this period, the students were paired with mentors from Nike who taught and introduced them to different aspects of the retail business; in addition to different life skills. Upon the completion of the program, four of the students were offered full time employment with Nike.

Due to the great success of this pilot program, Nike and Mavericks High of Osceola have turned what was just a relationship, into a bona fide partnership geared for success. Nike has already requested to make their visits twice a year. In addition, they have secured 25-30 positions at five (of their) different stores throughout Osceola and Orange County for Mavericks’ students. This is sure to be the beginning of many great things to come from this great partnership.
